  • Drinking can negatively impact how a person performs as a parent or partner; it can also lead a person to be violent, to spend more time away from home, or to cause their loved ones to feel anxiety, fear and depression.
  • At one time, it was believed that there were very few women with alcohol problems, but studies indicate that women's alcohol problems are simply less visible. They wait longer to seek treatment and often use mental health services or non-alcohol treatment programs instead of seeking specific help for drinking.
  • Individual reactions to alcohol vary widely, and are influenced by a variety of factors such as age, genetics, use of drugs, the rate of the alcohol consumption, the amount of food consumed before drinking, and an individual's physical condition in regard to their weight and fitness level.
  • Some beers and wines containing lower concentrations of ethanol are commonly referred to as "lite" while some are "light" (in color), such as white wine, vodka, gin, tequila; there is some evidence that indicates that drinking these products will produce less negative effects in terms of a "hangover", than darker beverages such as red wine, bourbon, or scotch.
