In 2005, alcohol dependence and alcohol abuse cost the United States an estimated $220 billion dollars. This more than the costs associated with cancer ($196 billion) and obesity ($133 billion).
It is estimated that fifty percent of U.S. homicides are alcohol related.
A recent study compared the brain scans of teens who consume alcohol heavily with the scans of teens that don't. The study found damaged nerve tissue in the brains of the teens that drank. This damage negatively affects attention span in boys, and girls' ability to comprehend and interpret visual information.
Heavy bouts of drinking can result in an individual experiencing a condition that is commonly referred to as a"hangover", which may include headache, nausea, shakiness, and sometimes vomiting. This condition is due partly to alcohol poisoning and partly to the body's reaction to withdrawal from alcohol. There is currently no effective cure for this condition beyond refraining from heavy alcohol consumption.
