  • Not all people who drink heavily are alcoholics, but this is a huge risk factor; sometimes it can appear that alcoholism develops suddenly in response to a stressful change in an individual's life such as a breakup, retirement, or some other type of loss.
  • Often those closest to an alcoholic find it difficult to see and acknowledge that someone they know and care about can be an alcoholic. They may believe the promises that the alcoholic keeps making. However, with time, repeated breaking of these promises can force those living with the alcoholic to face the truth.
  • Binge drinking is a common pattern of excessive alcohol use in the United States. The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism defines binge drinking as a pattern of drinking that brings a persons blood alcohol concentration (BAC) to 0.08 grams percent or above. This typically happens when men consume 5 or more drinks, and when women consume 4 or more drinks, in about 2 hours.
  • Adolescents who consume alcohol are six times as likely as non-drinkers to report skipping school.
