As many women under age 30 are drinking at levels that could be harmful to their unborn children, and because an estimated 45 percent of all pregnancies in the U.S. are unplanned, the babies of those women who do abuse alcohol may already suffer damage before mother discovers they are pregnant.
"Problem drinking" is generally defined as any consumption of alcohol that results in significant risk of physical damage, psychological problems, accidents, and social or domestic problems.
An estimated 5,000 people under the age of 21 die as a result of underage alcohol drinking each year. This includes about 1,900 deaths from motor vehicle crashes, 1,600 as a result of homicides, 300 from suicide, and hundreds from other injuries such as falls, burns, and drowning.
An estimated 26% of underage drinkers who abuse alcohol or are alcohol dependent drink 47.3% of the alcohol that is consumed by all underage drinkers.
