  • Women are more likely than men to start heavy drinking later in life.
  • Women become more impaired than men do after drinking the exact same amount of alcohol; this happens because women's bodies have less water than men's bodies. Because alcohol mixes with body water, alcohol becomes more highly concentrated in a woman's body than in a man's; a simple way to explain this is to use the example of dropping the same amount of alcohol into a much smaller pail of water.
  • For most people who drink, alcohol is a pleasant accompaniment to social activities. Moderate alcohol use-up to two drinks per day for men and one drink per day for women and older people-is not harmful for most adults. (A standard drink is one 12-ounce bottle or can of either beer or wine cooler, one 5-ounce glass of wine, or 1.5 ounces of 80-proof distilled spirits.) Nonetheless, a large number of people get into serious trouble because of their drinking.
  • When a pregnant woman consumes alcohol, it passes through the placenta to the growing fetus. Because a developing baby's body breaks down alcohol much more slowly than an adult's, a fetus's blood alcohol level can rise much higher than its mother's and stay elevated longer.
