  • Although alcoholism can be treated and long-term sobriety obtained, the recovered person must realize that they do not have the ability to control their alcohol intake after completing treatment. In other words, even if an alcoholic has been sober for a long time and has regained health, he or she remains susceptible to relapse and must continue to avoid all alcoholic beverages. "Cutting down" on drinking doesn't work; cutting out alcohol is necessary for a successful recovery.
  • The first mention of alcohol in the Hebrew Bible occurs in the book of Genesis. It is written that Noah drank too much wine made from the vineyards he planted after the flood.
  • College campuses have a reputation for episodes of rapid binge drinking (which often happens on a bet or a dare); this type of drinking is especially dangerous because the victim can ingest a fatal dose of alcohol before they become unconscious.
  • Long-term excessive alcohol abuse can lead to pancreatitis (that is, an inflammation of the pancreas), which is associated with severe abdominal pain and excessive weight loss and can result in death.
